Beguiling audiences since 2019, Australian Songbirds is a long standing audience favourite within the Ensemble Offspring repertoire.
This remarkable musical experience is a vibrant celebration of Australia’s unique avian soundscape, brought to life through chamber works commissioned by Ensemble Offspring from a flock of Australian composers.
The musical guest list includes the pied butcherbird, magpies, a laughing kookaburra, a frenzied flock of rainbow lorikeets, the haunting tawny frogmouth and even a nightingale… Our bird friends have long inspired mimicry, homage and creative reflection.
Enjoy an intimate, rural setting where nature comes to you, as a trio of flute, clarinet and percussion evokes virtuosic avian displays and the weird and wonderful sounds of the Australian bush.
Presented by Lamorna Nightingale (flutes), Jason Noble (clarinets) and Claire Edwardes (percussion), this evocative program features works by First Nations composers Brenda Gifford, Nardi Simpson alongside Fiona Loader, Caitlin Yeo and more - composers who’ve woken up with ‘Nature’s first musicians’, hung out with them on their balconies and documented their songs.
With rich textures, rhythmic flair and birdcall samples, Australian Songbirds is a soaring tribute to the magic of our feathered friends.
